Deadpool and Wolverine is the latest MCU film release starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman returning to their iconic roles. The movie follows Deadpool AKA Wade Wilson (played by Ryan Reynolds) getting snatched by the Time Variance Authority or the TVA informing Wade that is world is coming to an end. Wade seeks the help of an alternate Wolverine (played by Hugh Jackman) who is not like the Wolverine from his world and from there encounter villains and other variants from other universes and timelines in order to save the world of Deadpool’s.
The leads of Jackman and Reynolds were fantastic. Reynolds is what Robert Downey Jr. is to Iron Man. Reynolds was just born to play Deadpool. He was funny, charming, brutal, and an all-around delight to watch. He carried some great emotional beats as well and knows when to bring in the dramatic side of the character when he needs to and when he needs to bring in the comedy. But Jackman in particular was easily the best performance in this movie. Despite playing Wolverine for nearly two decades dating back to the original X-Men from 2000 he brings in a new take on his classic role and made it different to what he brought before. It also helps that they finally gave him the classic yellow and blue costume from the comics. Jackman brings in a more somber and reluctant side of Logan and made it clear that it’s not the same Wolverine that was seen in previous movies. The action he performs was hands down the best Wolverine action put to screen. It was visceral, brutal, and the way the claws were being used felt real and authentic. Speaking of action this is easily some of the best action put into the MCU. The action was brutal, creative, and easy to follow with unique settings and great displays of powers and brutality of the leads.
Emma Corrin as the villainous Cassandra Nova was a welcomed addition as well. She wasn’t the most compelling villain ever written but she had a disturbing, creepy, and memorable display of her kinetic and telepathic powers that were ripped straight out of the comics. The other performance I enjoyed without getting into big spoilers was Matthew Macfadyen as Mister Paradox who plays a TVA agent that feels very much like the opposite of Owen Wilsons character from the Loki series on Disney+. The last performance I want to mention was Peggy as Mary Puppins AKA Dogpool. She was the most adorably ugly dog ever put on screen but was an absolute treasure to watch and it makes me want to love and protect the dog as much as Wade does. Last positive thing I want to mention is the soundtrack. It had a great selection of songs ranging from NSYNC, Madonna, and Green Day with some of them playing during some the movies best moments.
The flaws I have with this movie were very minimal. The only issues I had with movie was though great I feel it’ll appeal more to fans of Marvel that has been following the brand for years, even before 2008’s Iron Man. General audiences will find it entertaining just not on the same level as diehard fans.
Overall, I had an absolute blast watching this movie from start to finish. It was a great send off to the Fox Marvel Universe filled with great action, humor, and leads. It’s a great first R rated project from the MCU and I’m excited to see more from these characters and where the MCU is going forward. I give Deadpool and Wolverine a very high 9/10.
SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!
The cameos and appearances in this movie were insane. There were Wolverine variants ranging from Wolverine from the Age of Apocalypse universe, a comic accurate short 5’4 Wolverine, Patch, John Bryne yellow and brown Wolverine about to fight the Hulk, and my favorite was Henry Cavil playing a version of Wolverine Deadpool dubs “The Cavilirine” even taking jabs at DC for misusing the former Superman actor. There were a bunch of alternate Deadpool’s played by Blake Lively, Matthew Mcconaughey, Nathan Fillion, and Reynolds own children. But the best cameos from this movie for me was Dafne Keen returning as X-23 from 2017’s Logan, Channing Tatum as Gambit from the Gambit movie that was cancelled, Wesley Snipes Blade, and the best of the bunch for me was Chris Evans returning not as Captain America but as the Human Torch from the Fantastic Four movies from the early 2000’s. The best cheer moment for me in the movie was seeing Jackman finally wear the iconic Wolverine cowl. It was something I’ve always wanted to see and thought never would be due to how Logan ended. With how this movie ended I truly believe the next Avengers movie is going to be Avengers Vs X-Men, setting up Secret Wars. Since the Fox universe was never destroyed and it could lead to a collision course to the main MCU much like how the main Marvel Comics and Ultimate Comics universe were about to collide which lead into the comic Secret Wars. With Secret Wars being built up as this sagas “Endgame” I believe this where the MCU is heading, and I really hope that’s the case.
