The Fall Guy is the latest line of movies based on a TV series from the 80’s and stars Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt.
The movie follows a Hollywood stuntman Colt Seavers (played by Ryan Gosling) coming out of retirement following a horrible on set accident. However, things get more complicated when his former fling Jody Banks (played by Emily Blunt) is directing the film Colt is working for and a mystery involving the film’s lead puts Colt in a spot to figure out what’s going on and hopefully save Jody’s movie.
This movie was very fun to watch. It’s definitely one of the better tv show to movie adaptions in recent memory. It had an all-around great cast with the likes of Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Winston Duke, Hannah Waddingham, and of course the films two main leads who stole the show with their on-screen chemistry Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling. Gosling in particular showcases his raw talent as a leading man. He was incredibly charming, knows how to make an action scene look great, and was funny at the right moments. Whenever he was on screen with Duke and Blunt in particular being stand outs. Blunt was a great female lead as ever and was a delight to watch. With one scene in particular she really shows her comedic chops against Gosling’s character. The action was incredibly well done. Since this movie is about stuntmen in Hollywood it makes sense that the action would be great. It had some really impressive car chases and explosions so much so to the point whereby the end credits the movie showcases the incredible work being done on set and what they did to accomplish a lot of these stunts. It made it feel like a true love letter to the magic of making movies and gives the people behind the camera a lot of respect, recognition, and love.
Now this movie also has some issues. Though funny not every joke stuck the landing for me. There were some that were genuinely laugh out loud funny (unicorn) but there was a handful of others that I didn’t find very funny. I wished there was more of Aaron Taylor-Johnson. He did a great job of playing an actor with a massive ego and I just wished there was more of him. Lastly, I felt like the movie could’ve benefitted from having a shorter runtime. There were moments that took place that kind of felt like got dragged on and most of it didn’t really lead to anywhere.
Overall, despite my critiques I really enjoyed this movie. It’s a true love letter to movie magic with great action, cast, and an incredible lead to follow. With it’s hit or miss humor didn’t overshadow the overall experience and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good time in the theater. I give The Fall Guy a 7.5/10
I really liked this movie. Great review. I think I would have given it a solid 8.
